Pumping Station: One

Pumping Station: One (PS1) is one of the largest member-driven makerspaces in the country, playing a vital role in fostering creativity, technical exploration, and collaborative problem-solving. As a nonprofit organization, PS1 serves as a hub where over 700 members come together to share knowledge, resources, and ideas in a supportive, community-driven environment.

At its core, PS1 is defined by its democratic structure: decisions about the organization and its future are made by its members, with no paid staff. This model empowers individuals to contribute based on their interests and expertise, driving both day-to-day operations and long-term growth. Anyone can propose initiatives or votes, making the organization a dynamic and evolving space shaped by collective effort.

What truly sets PS1 apart is the breadth of tools, spaces, and disciplines it supports. Members have access to fully equipped areas for woodworking, metalworking, electronics fabrication, 3D printing, textiles, CNC machining, laser cutting, welding, ceramics, jewelry making, and more. Beyond physical tools, PS1 offers an environment where creative minds from diverse fields—including engineering, design, art, and entrepreneurship—collaborate and learn from one another.

This multidisciplinary approach makes PS1 a catalyst for both personal growth and ambitious projects. Whether building custom hardware, developing new software, prototyping inventions, or pursuing artistic endeavors, members have the resources and expertise at their fingertips to turn ideas into reality. The community thrives on mentorship, workshops, and informal knowledge sharing, all fueled by a shared passion for making and learning.

As the current president of Pumping Station: One, and a board member for the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of guiding the organization through strategic growth. My focus has been on fostering stability, improving communication, and ensuring that the organization continues to serve as a space for innovation and discovery. The board of directors has become more collaborative and future-focused under my leadership, and I’m proud of the work we’ve done to strengthen the foundation for years to come.

PS1 is more than a collection of tools and spaces; it is a community built on curiosity, generosity, and initiative. It’s a place where people come not only to make things, but to make connections, share knowledge, and contribute to something larger than themselves. I am honored to be part of this thriving community and excited for the future we are building together.
